Start Over on Health Care Reform

Preamble

President Obama’s initial attempt to seize control of one-sixth of the U.S. economy by nationalizing the American health care system has failed.

But serious issues continue to plague our health insurance system, and they must be addressed.

Now is the time to start over on health insurance reform and do it right.

Petition

We ask that President Obama and Congressional Democrats join with Republican leaders to start over on health insurance reform.

We ask that they help craft sensible reforms designed to lower costs and expand access without violating individual rights or the integrity of the market.

We ask that they enact medical liability reform and put an end to frivolous lawsuits that drive up the cost of medicine.

We ask that they allow individuals and small businesses to pool together to purchase high-quality affordable health care coverage.

We ask that they allow Americans to shop for health care coverage from coast to coast and purchase insurance policies across state lines.

We ask that they create new incentives to save for current and future health care needs by allowing people to use their health savings accounts funds to pay premiums for high deductible health plans.

We ask that they guarantee individuals with pre-existing conditions or past illnesses access to affordable coverage through the expansion of state-based, high-risk pools, and reinsurance programs.

We reject any attempt by the federal government to force any American to purchase an unwanted insurance plan.

We reject any attempt to implement a government-run insurance program.

We reject individual mandates, rationing, and special deals for any state.

We reject a separate set of rules for government and private sector health insurance purchases.

We oppose any plan that betrays our senior citizens by cutting Medicare coverage, or that allocates taxpayer funds to pay for abortion.

We reject any proposal that authorizes a government takeover of any portion of our health care system.

We ask that Congress and the President above all pledge to ensure the constitutionality of any health insurance reform legislation considered by the federal government.

We implore the President and his allies to listen to the will of the American people and start over on health insurance reform.

Vilas County GOP held Caucus Monday Feb 22

gop_republican_elephantMonday evening the Vilas County GOP held their Caucus and also regular monthly meeting in Eagle River.

Jim Knuth summarized 2009 highlights by the group:

  • Lincoln Day Dinner Feb 6, 2009 had 160 in attendance, Scott Walker was keynote speaker
  • Last spring 3 movies were shown and public was invited - the Northwoods Patriots was born out of these presentations
  • Independence Day Parades - marched in parades with float and handed out over 8,000 flags with GOP tags attached
  • Vilas GOP helped with the Northwoods Patriots with the July 4 Tea Party at the Derby Track - proof that the Tea Party movement is indeed a national movement, here to stay and will be influential in future
  • Numerous GOP candidates were present at our meetings during 2009 and spoke to our group

Election of Officers was held and new board is as follows:

  • Treasurer:  Jim Lynn
  • Secretary:  Mary Lou Hakes
  • Vice Chair #1:  Kim Simac
  • Vice Chair #2: Jeff Kirschmann
  • Chairman:  Jim Knuth

There was no group discussion of GOP principles, but our chairman did explain that principles he believed were important were listed on the back of business cards for the group.  There was  one proposal made that would allow our group to endorse candidates before the primary election in September.  After discussion and dissent from members who said they felt the primary elections would serve this purpose and that we did not want a NY-23 situation happening here in Wisconsin, the resolution never came up for a vote.

Jim Lynn listed the 30 delegates and 30 alternates for the Vilas GOP, who has 30 votes to represent our county at the 8th District Caucus March 6 and at the State Convention May 21-23.  Any members are invited to attend these functions - please contact a board member if you have interest in attending.

During the GOP Regular Meeting, Knuth reported that 180 were in attendance at the Lincoln Day Dinner Feb 5, 2010 at the Whitetail Inn in St. Germain.  Numerous speakers were well received by the group and the evening did turn a profit for the Vilas GOP so thank you to all who attended and helped in any way to make the evening a success!

He asked for assistance with various initiatives including publicity chair, hospitality chair, awards chair (to handle state GOP awards efforts), campaign headquarters leader, and a resolutions committee were all requested to move the group forward in 2010.  Jeff Kirschmann came forward suggesting that a membership committee be formed too and he agreed to chair that effort.

Discussion then focused on future efforts of the group and events we would participate in during 2010.  Please watch our event calendar for upcoming meetings, events and candidate visits in the coming months!

Kim Simac then spoke and told the group of the Northwoods Patriots meetings every 2nd and 4th Tuesday and that Marc Savard and Roger Roth were two upcoming candidates to attend those  meetings.  The Republican Women of the North will hold their next meeting March 10 at 9am as a meet/greet with Roger Roth and to conduct a meeting to plan for the May 8 Candidate Debte that the Republican Women will be hosting.

Which Candidates have signed on to the Liberty Compact?

Republican Liberty Caucus
Liberty Compact

The Liberty Compact was inspired by the late Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, author of “Conscience of a Conservative,” who argued government was not the solution — but the problem.

Candidates for public office seeking the endorsement of the Republican Liberty Caucus are asked to sign the Liberty Compact, which can be downloaded as a word document (.doc) or can be printed from a web document or a PDF and sent to the RLC.

I pledge to the citizens of this State, and to the American people, that as their elected representative I will work to: restore liberty, not restrict it; shrink government, not expand it; reduce taxes, not raise them; abolish programs, not create them; promote the freedom and independence of citizens, not the interference of government in their lives; and observe the limited, enumerated powers of our Constitution, not ignore them.

Liberty Compact signers include Congressmen Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Ron Paul (R-TX), John Shadegg (R-AZ), and former Congressman Bob Barr (R-GA).

Candidates can send completed Liberty Compacts to the National Chair.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush to Headline Fundraiser for Scott Walker Campaign
Scott Walker Campaign Announces Tickets on Sale for March 8th Event

Wauwatosa, WI – The campaign for Scott Walker, Milwaukee County executive and candidate for governor, today announced that former Florida governor, Jeb Bush, will headline an event in support of his candidacy.

“I’m honored that Governor Jeb Bush is supporting our campaign and our message of lower taxes, less government, and more freedoms,” said Walker. “Jeb did a tremendous job as governor of Florida, cutting $20 billion in taxes, reducing the state government workforce by more than 13,000, and creating a low tax business climate that allowed the private sector to net 1.4 million new jobs. He knows that the best way to get our country working again is to get government out of the way of the people. I’m grateful for Jeb’s commitment to help us take back Wisconsin, and I’m looking forward to hosting him.”

“Scott Walker believes small government is better government – and that’s exactly the type of common sense thinking Wisconsin needs to get back to work,” said Bush. “Scott has a proven record of good management – cutting the debt by 10%, the county workforce by 20%, and holding the line on taxes. I know he’ll make a great governor.”

The Governor Jeb Bush fundraiser in support of Scott Walker will take place on Monday, March 8 at the Pfister Hotel. Tickets are for sale on Scott Walker’s campaign website, www.ScottWalker.org.

Sarah Palin gave the closing (and keynote) speech at the National Tea Party Convention held in Nashville, TN.   When asked about where she saw the Tea Party Movement going, she commented on how she hoped the Republicans would embrace their movement as it is the new way in which politics in America will work.  The Convention hosted over 500 attendees from all over the country who gathered to work on how the Tea Party can influence the 2010 and 2012 elections.

Turn Frustration to Activism, by Owen Robinson

Turn Frustration To Activism

by Owen Robinson

In Wisconsin, there is a great deal of frustration among Conservatives regarding the direction of the Republican Party. The source of this angst is that Conservatives have worked very hard and very long to elect huge Republican majorities in the legislature, yet good Conservative legislation has been less than forthcoming (think: TABOR). As a Conservative, I appreciate and share this frustration.

The level of frustration is reaching a level where many Conservatives are talking about ceasing to be active in the Republican Party or fleeing it altogether. I am here to tell my Conservative brethren not to do this.

I am a Conservative. By this, I mean that I hold a belief system that is commonly defined as “conservative” in modern political jargon. Generally speaking, a Conservative supports limited government, the rule of law, individual liberty, and personal responsibility. Conservatism is a way of thinking about the world. It is a philosophy.

The Republican Party has absolutely nothing to do with Conservatism. The Republican Party, like all political parties, is an organ engineered for the purpose of obtaining, holding, and wielding power. One must never meld being a Conservative with being a Republican. They are not the same. Read the rest of this entry »
