Conservative HQ Grand Opening was held July 19

Area conservative groups, including the local Tea Party group known as the Northwoods Patriots and Republican organizations including the Vilas County Republicans and Republican Women of the North, held the grand opening of their new headquarters at 155 S Railroad Street in Eagle River.  All members and voters were invited to an Open House to celebrate the opening of the new headquarters on Monday, July 19.

Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Candidate Dave Ross, the current Mayor of Superior, spoke to the group, sharing his values, accomplishments and conservative vision for our state.  As Lt Governor he intends to support the efforts of the new Governor and be an advocate for small business as the state works to rebuild its employment base and foster economic growth.

Dan Meyer also spoke to our group, sharing his frustration as member of the minority in the Assembly working to keep the spending and legislating in check and his optimism for the sessions ahead where conservatives need to be effective leaders.

Various campaign literature and yard signs were distributed as the groups work to promote conservative candidates in the upcoming primary September 14 and general election November 2. Field representatives from Terri McCormick’s congressional campaign were present at the HQ to talk with attendees and distribute campaign literature.  Candidates who are members of the Northwoods Patriots or Republican Party are invited to provide their literature for display (see Vilas GOP memo to members regarding our rationale for supporting candidates). An large array of Northwoods Patriot and new Republican clothing was and continues to be available at the Headquarters.

While the three groups maintain separate memberships, meeting schedules and initiatives, they share common goals of conservatism and adherence to our US Constitution. The new Conservative Headquarters will be the host location to future meetings for each of the three groups and has separate membership literature to promote their unique positions and initiatives. All are invited to attend and bring friends and neighbors who would like to get involved in the conservative movement.

The convenient downtown headquarters is situated between D&S Mobil and Alexander’s Pizza, with plenty of free parking right across the street.

A message to members of the Vilas County Republican Party

A message to members of the Vilas County Republican Party:
(Delivered at the Grand Opening of the Conservative HQ July 19)

As the elected leaders of the Vilas County Republican Party, we would like to take this opportunity to clarify for the public our rationale for how we decide to treat prospective candidates running under the republican brand. Because Vilas County has historically trended towards the Republican side of the ticket, it is a common practice for local candidates to declare as Republicans simply because it is in their political best interest to do so, and not necessarily because they adhere to Republican ideals such as smaller government, free markets, or lower taxation. For many years, local candidates unknown to us have come forward just months before an election, proclaiming their credentials as Republicans and asking for our support, only to disappear once the election is over and remain unseen until the next election cycle comes around. And although we as the party leadership ultimately have no say in who decides to run under the Republican name sake, we will, to the best of our ability, give support to those candidates who have established Republican credentials and who we believe best represent the ideals of the Republican Party. How does one establish such credentials? First and foremost, a person should be a dues paying member in good standing with the Vilas County Republicans and or, the Wisconsin GOP or National GOP. Second, and perhaps most important, a person needs to show up to our meetings and to our events long before they decide to run for office. From the organization and planning that goes into the Lincoln Day Dinner or The Great Debate, to the preparations for the 4th of July parades, many hard working volunteers work selflessly year in and year out to ensure the Republican Party is well represented here in Vilas County. If a person joins us in such efforts, and establishes that their views are in line with ours, we will do the best that we can to support them when they decide to run for office. But understand that we believe the greatest mistake the Republican Party has made in recent years is the practice of supporting candidates simply because they claim to be Republicans. We believe that in order to truly reform our country for the better, we must first ensure that the candidates being put forth by the party are true conservatives, and not those simply using the party name to attain public office. Lacking other means, one of the best ways of accomplishing this is to support those people who have come to the Republican Party asking how they can help us, and not those who come to us looking to help them.

Terrence Wall’s departure trims GOP field to 2 in US Senate Race

Article by the Wisconsin State Journal:  http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt_and_politics/article_15fb9f3a-699d-11df-92d1-001cc4c002e0.html

Madison-area developer Terrence Wall dropped out of the U.S. Senate race Thursday, saying it was the honorable thing to do, but he stopped short of endorsing any of his fellow candidates for the Republican nomination.

“I’ll continue to be involved in getting our country turned around, but it’s time for me to take a step back and take a hard look at how we move our country and the Republican Party forward,” Wall said in a statement.

His departure leaves two Republican candidates fighting for the chance to face Democratic U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold in November: tea party favorite Ron Johnson and Watertown businessman Dave Westlake. Former Commerce Secretary Dick Leinenkugel dropped out of the race at last week’s GOP convention and endorsed Johnson.

Wall’s announcement comes just four days after he lost the his party’s endorsement to Johnson, an Oshkosh businessman with no political experience. Johnson entered the race less than a week before the convention.

“If you said there was a candidate who entered the race five days before the convention and five days later stood as the odds-on favorite, you would think that candidate was (former GOP Governor) Tommy Thompson,” said Charles Franklin, UW-Madison poltical science professor. “Instead, it’s a guy most of us have not heard of before.”

Despite having a resume similar to Johnson’s, Wall never gained traction with Republican voters and suffered from some bad publicity, Franklin said.

Earlier this year, the State Journal reported Wall, a millionaire real estate developer, paid no net taxes in nine out of the previous 10 years, except in 2005 when he paid $43,520.

His staff accused Democrats of trying to mislead the public and said Wall’s companies paid more than $30 million in taxes over the last five years. Still, many experts felt the issue could haunt Wall during the campaign.

“Not paying taxes is a major issue,” said Jim Klauser, one of Wall’s honorary campaign co-chairs. “I think that threw a cloud over his whole campaign.”

Klauser called Johnson the best Republican candidate this year and said the party should unite behind him. Reince Priebus, Republican Party of Wisconsin chairman, thanked Wall for helping the party spread its message to voters.

“I … respect his decision to exit the race at this time but look forward to continuing together our efforts to elect a new senator for Wisconsin,” Priebus said.

In a statement Thursday, Johnson thanked Wall for running a good campaign and wished him well. Westlake, however, expressed sadness over his opponent’s departure. “He’s put in a lot of time, a lot of effort, a lot of hard work and a lot of money,” Westlake said. “I am sorry to see his campaign end this way. I truly am.”

Westlake said the chances of him dropping out were “zero, absolutely none.” Too many supporters have bought into his message of smaller government and fiscal responsibility, he said.

Wall, 45, was mounting his first statewide race after failing in both 2001 and last year to get elected to the village board of Maple Bluff. He had called himself a fiscal conservative and said he based his campaign around the need to create jobs, cut government spending and reduce taxes.

“We did show that we could win this race and we did so running an honest, clean campaign,” Wall said. “Last October, the polls showed us down double digits and few had heard my name outside of Dane County. Recent polling now shows that we have closed within the margin of error.”

Feingold has been in the Senate since 1992 following a 10-year stint in the state Legislature. Feingold won his last race in 2004 against Republican Tim Michels by 11 points.
