The Republican Party is showing some starch by standing up to Harry Reid on the financial regulation bill. We can only hope they keep it up.

The Obama administration is selling a bill of goods inside the Beltway by saying that the GOP is getting into bed with the worst of Wall Street by opposing its bill. The truth is that the rest of the country fears big government a lot more than they fear big business and recognizes that Goldman Sachs and the other Wall Street giants feed at the Democratic trough as much or more than at the Republican one.

Republicans just need to keep pointing out that Goldman was the biggest donor to the Obama campaign, contributing $970,000 from its employees and PACs. (The combined donations of the staff and faculty of the University of California totaled $1.5 million, but they are hardly a coherent corporate entity like Goldman).

The financial regulation bill is a disaster in three major respects:

1. It gives incentives for irresponsibility by, in effect, guaranteeing banks’ survival by establishing a $50 billion rescue fund. In doing so, it gives the large banks a huge advantage and extends to them the same kind of implicit guarantee that once encouraged the likes of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae to go on their lending spree. It is a key step in the conversion of big banks into quasi-public institutions, ultimately controlled by the government, levers through which the public sector can control the private.

2. By vesting the secretary of the Treasury with the power to seize — in a hostile takeover — any financial institution he deems too big to fail, it puts at risk of public takeover every such company in the nation. Granted, the FDIC now has the power to seize any bank. But the FDIC is headed by a nonpartisan board with a heritage of nonpolitical regulation. The secretary of the Treasury is an arm of the president. If a political appointee has the power to take over any financial institution — bank or non-bank — fire the board, replace the management, wipe out stock equity and sell off pieces of the company, it gives him a power that is so awesome it can undermine our democratic freedoms. What corporate executive will feel free to donate to Obama’s opponents or to speak out against the administration when doing so could cost him his job and his bank?

3. The newly established Consumer Financial Protection Agency will have the power to approve or reject any loan instrument offered by any company in the land. A mattress company that wants to let customers go 60 days before paying will have to get CFPA approval before extending credit. The bureaucratic bottleneck will slow economic activity, encourage corruption and retard consumer spending. It will be big government at its worst.

The entire political premise of the Obama administration’s efforts to pass this bill is flawed: Republicans will not be blamed for protecting the banks if they vote down this bill. Voters will not believe that the GOP is in cahoots with Wall Street. They will understand that the Republicans in Congress protected them from the massive growth of government.

Obama’s power-grabs have been so frequent and so blatant that he has no credibility on this subject. Voters expect him to be fighting to grow government and to be hostile to private enterprise. And they are wise to his close connection with Wall Street despite his occasional forays into populism.

This is a bill the Republican Party can kill with political impunity, and hopefully they will have the courage to do so.

Time to Educate the Public, Congress on Our Constitution

A Civilian National Security Force Not Needed Against Americans

On Thursday, April 15th, while thousands of people marched on the State Capitol lawn to bring our government back to its limited government roots, State Senator Glenn Grothman announced he is introducing a resolution objecting to a potential national security force that President Obama touted during his campaign.

“While prior administrations of both parties expanded federal power in ways which would have horrified the drafters of the Constitution, the current Administration is continuing this pace at a fevered pitch,” said Grothman. “My constituents are demanding the Legislature fight back.”

“While I have signed on to resolutions dealing with the recent healthcare power grab, I have decided to bring the Legislature’s attention to President Obama’s bizarre campaign promise to establish ‘… a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, and just as well funded” as our military,” said Grothman. “The speech was given at the University of Colorado on July 2, 2008, and the context of the speech makes it clear this is not an expansion of AmeriCorps or similar other civilian make-work program. There is no way any American that is the least bit concerned about our nation’s future should not be horrified at what is going on in that man’s mind.”

“Domestic security in America is clearly a local function. I can understand why totalitarian regimes want a large domestic security force to keep the citizenry in line,” said Grothman. “It is appalling when a person running for federal office would have uttered the words above and we have yet to hear any adequate explanation for what he was saying. It is important the State of Wisconsin go on record as saying we will not recognize the authority of any new national police force President Obama plans on sending into our state.”

RE: Co-sponsorship - LRB 4595/2 - Resolution Against a Civilian National Security Force

Short Deadline: If you would like to co-sponsor this legislation, please contact my office at 266-7513 by Noon on Tuesday April 20th.

Colleagues,

We have seen an alarming expansion of federal powers over the last 13 ½ months which is clearly contrary to the intent of the framers of our Constitution.

This erosion was preceded by the prior administration but has increased at an accelerated clip under President Obama. It is time to assert our rights under the 9th and 10th Amendments to the Constitution as we don’t know what the next expansion will be.

At one point on the campaign trail, Candidate Obama mentioned establishing “…a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, and just as well funded” as our military.

In order to make clear that the states will not stand for this extreme power grab and educate the public as to what a bizarre president we currently have, I am drafting a Senate Resolution objecting to such a police force.

If you would like to co-sponsor Senate Joint Resolution (LRB 4595/2), please contact my office at 266-7513 by Noon on Tuesday, April 20.

You Have the Right to Remain Silent, by Kerry Thomas (re: US Census)

You Have the Right to Remain Silent

by Kerry Thomas

March 18, 2010

How much of your private information are you going to give to a total stranger this year?

Your government is spending millions of your tax dollars trying to convince you to voluntarily reveal all sorts of otherwise private information about yourself and everyone who lives in your home, all as part of the census.

You do have to tell these government bureaucrats how many people live in your home. But that’s all. The Constitution requires an enumeration, nothing more. And the reason for such an enumeration is to apportion seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution requires “The actual Enumeration shall be made within three years after the first meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent term of ten years, in such manner as they shall by law direct.

Yes, Congress has the power to direct the manner in which the enumeration is taken. But they are only Constitutionally empowered to take an enumeration. Any other questions are extraneous.

Under our Constitution, you don’t have to answer any question about your mortgage. You don’t have to answer any questions about your name, your age, your sex, your race, or your employment. You don’t have to answer any questions about your income, your employer, or what time you leave for work each day.

The Census Bureau has a catchy little Obama-esque slogan for their multi-million dollar ad campaign about “We can’t move forward until you mail it back.” Move forward? With what? The fundamental transformation of America?

The Census Bureau is also sending out what they’re calling an American Community Survey, which asks even more invasive questions about you and your lifestyle. They say they need this information in order to plan future community projects and to ensure adequate government services.

If you do answer any of these extraneous questions, you had better get them all right. You can be charged with perjury if you give false answers. It’s unfortunate, but most of this information is already in a public database somewhere, be it your local zoning office, voter registration rolls, or even the phone book.

Ironically, one salient question that is not on any of the census forms is whether or not you are a U.S. citizen.

The bureaucratic peons who come to your door asking these invasive questions will tell you that refusing to answer these questions could result in a $5,000 fine. They will cite a federal law that compels you answer these questions.

In 2000, I placed a note on my front door for the census takers, in which I disclosed the number of persons living in my house. When the census takers knocked on my door, they asked if the note was for them. I answered, “Yes.” They asked if I refused to answer any more of their questions. I answered, “Yes.” They thanked me and walked away. So I can truthfully say I answered every question the census takers asked of me.

In the entire 220 year history of the U.S. census, there has been exactly one person charged in connection with refusing to cooperate with the census. It was in the 1960’s and he was charged not with refusing to answer the questions but with perjury for giving false answers.

You see, there’s a little thing called the Fifth Amendment, which ensures your right to due process and says you can’t be compelled to testify against yourself. Every trained law enforcement officer knows you have the right to remain silent. Even terrorists are given Miranda rights.

White House jobs forum focuses on job creation

By The Associated Press (AP) – 1 day ago

Participants in President Barack Obama’s jobs forum Thursday broke into six groups to discuss job creation strategies. Summaries of the discussions in each group.

Creating Jobs by Rebuilding Infrastructure

President Barack Obama told more than 20 labor, industry, and local officials that government faces a dilemma when it tries to use highway, rail, aviation and other infrastructure projects to create jobs.

The “tension,” said Obama, is between projects that can put people to work quickly, which tend to be upkeep and repair work, and the more “visionary” projects that require planning and time to implement but don’t produce jobs as fast.

Obama responded warmly to endorsements from several participants of a national infrastructure bank, a concept he backed on the campaign trail. Such a bank would use public and private capital to fund projects. Obama said the bank would take politics out of the project selection process and “leverage private sector dollars that are right now sitting on the sidelines.”

Gerard Arpey, chairman of American Airlines and AMR Corp., made a pitch for more funding for a new air traffic control system based on GPS technology instead of World War II-era radar technology.

The Federal Aviation Administration anticipates spending $15 billion to $22 billion on the “NextGen” program, which is expected to be completed around 2020. But FAA’s plans also call for airlines to shell out an additional $14 billion to $20 billion to install equipment their planes would need to use the new system. Airlines, many of which are in financial trouble, want the government to pick up the entire tab for a new air traffic control system.

Cloward/Piven Strategy

An article published back in February 2009 is resurfacing due to its clear and precise explanation of how the Cloward/Piven Strategy of creating and managing crisis is dictating the actions of our federal government.  Please read this article carefully, reread, and come to see the motivations behind our government’s actions.  Under their plans, the end justifies the means.

The Cloward/Piven Strategy of Economic Recovery

February 07, 2009, American Thinker
By
Nancy Coppock

Using borrowed money for a band-aid bailout of the economy should seem backwards to most people. However, it likely is a planned strategy to promote radical change. Those naively believing that President Obama is simply rewarding his far-left base, and will then move to the political center, must wise up.
The assumption that Obama will need the nation to prosper in order to protect the 2010 mid-term election incorrectly assumes that he esteems free market capitalism. He does not. Rather than win through superior ideas and policies, the Democrat plan for success in the mid-term elections is to win by destroying political opposition.
Obama adheres to the Saul Alinksy Rules for Radicals method of politics, which teaches the dark art of destroying political adversaries. However, that text reveals only one front in the radical left’s war against America. The Cloward/Piven Strategy is another method employed by the radical Left to create and manage crisis. This strategy explains Rahm Emanuel’s ominous statement, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”
The Cloward/Piven Strategy is named after Columbia University sociologists Richard Andrew Cloward and Frances Fox Piven. Their goal is to overthrow capitalism by overwhelming the government bureaucracy with entitlement demands. The created crisis provides the impetus to bring about radical political change.
Rather than placating the poor with government hand-outs, wrote Cloward and Piven, activists should work to sabotage and destroy the welfare system; the collapse of the welfare state would ignite a political and financial crisis that would rock the nation… [Emphasis added.]

OBAMACARE ENDORSEMENTS: WHAT THE BRIBE WAS

By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

Published on TheHill.com on November 6, 2009

As the suicidal Democratic congressmen proceed to rubber-stamp the Obama healthcare reform despite the drubbing their party took in the ‘09 elections, the president trotted out the endorsements of the AMA and the AARP to stimulate support. But these — and the other endorsements — his package has received are all bought and paid for.

Here are the deals: Read the rest of this entry »
